Andhra Pradesh

We are alive!  Sorry it has taken a couple days to update what the team has been up to, but we were not able to blog while in Andhra Pradesh.  Monday morning we began our long journey to Chirala, Andhra Pradesh, which was supposed to be a six hour journey.  However, due to the highway check-ins, our travels turned into an all-day trip.  Needless to say, we were all tired and happy to arrive in Chirala.

After checking in at our hotel (which would be an interesting experience for all), we went to Pastor Calvin’s for dinner and were refreshed yet again by the Indian hospitality.  We then did our first of many village outreaches.   Many of the people in that village believed in Jesus Christ already but were not living lives that honored Him as Lord, so please pray that that work would be accomplished there.

I want to give a brief outline of what each village outreach looked like.  Usually, Charles, Gracia, and John would begin playing music or Pastor Ted would start his light show first in order to draw people to where we were at.  Then, whichever of those two performances had not gone first would go second (hope that makes sense).  After people had gathered, one of the guys would share a story from the Word and the Gospel.  We would then as individuals pray for the people in the villages, one by one.  Specifics on how each outreach went will have to be shared in person.

The next day was the women’s conference, where Gracia led the women in music; Sarah S., Brenda, and Leanne all shared from God’s word; and Sarah R., Maria, and Lilliana shared their testimonies.  The day was hot and humid, and poor Calvin stood for three hours translating everything (American conferences are definitely different).  However, there were about 100 women (and about that many men) who came to the conference, so please pray that the Word that was given would continue to minister to their hearts and minds, encouraging them in their ministries.  We then performed two more village outreaches that night, with a Hindu man and a woman coming to the Lord.  I cannot do their stories justice here, but we look forward to sharing them with you all.  Please pray that God would continue to work in their lives and grow them in Him.

Wednesday was the men’s conference, where Pastor Ted, John, Luke, and Donald shared (Matt was supposed to but for time’s sake did not) and Charles led worship.  For the first half of the conference, however, Pastor Sunny and Rashan (our translator) took us women shopping.  It was a fun experience!

After our return and the conference was over, we ate lunch and then continued on to the Indian Ocean to watch Pastor Nehemiah (a Bible college graduate from last year) perform his first baptism, as two ladies made their outward confession of faith in Christ.  It was an amazing experience, as we pulled up to the ocean and smelled rotting fish nets and saw tons of fishing boats floating just off shore.  The Scriptures have really come alive for many of us in being able to see pictures such as that.

After the baptism, we visited Pastor Nehemiah’s first church and prayed for the believers there.  We then continued to another church of his and performed our village outreach.  Charles and Gracia will need to share their experiences of “music” during that outreach.  We ate dinner with Pastor Nehemiah and Pastor Roy after the outreach and spent our last night in the hotel.

The next day, we had breakfast with Pastor Calvin and said our sad goodbyes.  For some reason, being in Chirala made the entire missions trip come alive, and many of us expressed that we felt more connected to the work we are doing here after being there.  It was a blessing!  We began our trip back to Chennai, which was shorter this time because we had fewer delays.  Unfortunately, Sarah R. became ill on the drive home and was not able to eat much for the next day.  She seems to be doing better now, but please pray for a full recovery and her protection for the rest of the trip.  She has been a trooper!

Also on our trip home, Pastor Sunny blessed us by taking us to an “American” coffee house a few miles outside of Chennai.  It is funny how something so simple can make you so grateful for all we have in America.  Thursday evening we spent our time saying goodbye to the Oceanside team and giving our gifts to Pastor Sunny and his family.  We have been blessed to see how God is able to take complete strangers and cause fellowship to abound among them.  We all hope to see the Oceanside team again soon!

Friday morning was spent with the men at the Bible college and with Gracia and Sarah S. going to a women’s prayer meeting (Sarah R. was still not feeling well).  The afternoon was fairly relaxing for everyone (although I would not necessarily know since I was taking a nap), and that night we did our last village outreach to the same village where the story of David and Goliath was such a hit.  This outreach was special because we were teaching on the Ten Commandments, with a Hindu temple located right behind us.  It was great because Sarah R. taught the second commandment and used the temple as an example, saying that the idols in that temple were made with hands but our God is not made with hands; He made us, and we should worship Him.  There was also a man who was offering a sacrifice while we were teaching, so it was as if God was giving the children a picture of what not to do as we were teaching them what to do.

Today (Saturday) is our last day, which is hard to believe.  We have spent our morning at the Bible college, with Pastor Ted wrapping up his talk on Acts.  We plan to visit the beach this afternoon and go shopping again (since the guys were not able to the first time).   We will say our goodbyes tonight and leave for the airport tomorrow morning at 5 am.  But please pray for our safe travels and for continued protection for the team that will continue on to Sri Lanka.  Blessings!

Saturday & Sunday in India!

Saturday Events

Yesterday was our busiest day yet.  During the morning, the men attended their regular events of teaching at the Bible college (with the exception of Charles, who helped the women with worship), and the women took part in a chidren’s event (with the exception of Gracia, who led worship for the men).  The children’s event was amazing to take part in!  Over a hundred children attended the event, and we were able to share in singing with them, teaching the Gospel to them, doing a craft with them, serving lunch to them, and distributing the toys as well.  The children were a blessing to work with, and their excitement was a joy to behold.

After the morning events, we rested for a couple hours and then headed for the slums.  This was an incredible experience!  We split into two teams while there, one team ministering to some ladies and children at the church and the other team going into people’s homes and praying for them.  We then met up together and Pastor Ted performed his light show for the children, which drew quite a crowd.  They clapped after every trick.  Pastor Ted then shared the Gospel message with the people, so pray that the words he spoke will plant seeds in the hearts of those listening that the Bible college students may reap.

Sunday Events

Today was a special day!  It was special to see the Church in a different culture, a different setting, and different “beat.”  Every worship song, with the exception of one or two, was fast-paced and required lots of clapping.  Both missions’ teams performed “We Bow Down” during the offering, and Pastor Ted delivered the main message.  We then partook in a true, Indian cuisine dinner, eating with our hands and everything!  Note:  There is talk about holding an event at Calvary Bozeman where we will all sing Indian worship songs (meaning very upbeat worship songs with clapping) and eat Indian cuisine with our hands.  So you can all look forward to that!

Tonight we are attending another worship service at a different church here, and then tomorrow we leave for Andra Prudesh. Please continue to pray for us!  Please pray  for safe travels there and back, for the women’s and men’s conferences that will be held there, and for the villagers as we minister to them.  Pray that God’s word would be preached in truth, encouraging the believers who hear it and winning non-believers to Him.  God bless!

Thursday and Friday - Sarah Schendel

Thursday afternoon and evening!
Hello again everyone!  The last two days have been eventful and full of joy.  Last night we as a group went to one of the villages and ministered to the children there, along with a few of the Bible college students.  As we pulled up to the building, the children burst with excitement seeing that we were Americans and were there to spend time with them.  The verses in Luke 8 took on new meaning for us:  “And Jesus said, ‘Who is the one who touched me?’  And while they were all denying it, Peter said, ‘Master, the people are crowding and pressing in on You.’”  And they did!  As soon as we opened the van door, the children were reaching for our hands, shaking them eagerly, and asking us the one thing they could in English:  "Name?"

After all the excitement, the college students split the children into two groups, older and younger, and we divided our team among the groups.  Luke (to everyone’s surprise) shared the story of Noah and the flood with the younger children and the promise God has made to us.  There was also a period where the power went off in the building, and the children rushed outside to flee from the darkness.  Pastor Ted then entertained them with his “magic light show.”  The children loved it!  We were then able to pass out candy and Pastor Ted shared the gospel with them.

Events of Friday
Today was similar in schedule to that of yesterday.  The two teams shared in worship this morning and then continued on to the Bible college for the first teaching session, led by Pastor Ted.  Afterward, the men continued in their teaching sessions at the college and the women went to a prayer meeting with some Christian women, where Maria (from Oceanside) shared the story of Ruth and God’s redemption with them.  We then went back to Sunny’s parents’ house to rest for the afternoon.

The evening outreach included two groups.  The first group ministered to children at the Bible college, teaching, singing, and doing crafts with them.  They then shared in prayer time with all the college students. The second group ventured out into another village where they also ministered to children, teaching and acting out the story of David and Goliath, singing songs with them, and having them draw David defeating Goliath.  The children were so excited about the story, and they all cheered as David (Matt) slew Goliath (John) with his sling and stone.  The amazing part about ministering to the children in the village was that we held the meeting right outside a Hindu temple, and the village originally did not want them ministering there.  Praise God for opening that door and pray that He would continue to use what was spoken tonight and what the Bible college students continue to speak as a light in the darkness.  Amen.

Traffic, Hospitality, College and Women - Sarah Schendel

Hello,

We arrived safely in India yesterday afternoon, with all luggage accounted for (including the djembe and laptops!!!) and smooth sailing through security.  We were greeted warmly by Sunny at the airport and began our first adventure in India as we packed into a 13-passenger van, luggage and all, heading through the city.

India Traffic
It is hard to describe  the drive from the airport to Sunny’s parents’ house, since no city in the US really compares.  There would appear to be limited to no traffic laws here, other than “may the larger vehicle win.”  There are dogs and cows on the sides of the streets to be avoided, motor cyclists weaving in and out where they can, and people walking within inches of vehicles passing by.  We, ourselves, came within inches of other vehicles, but in spite of our team’s concern, Sunny appeared to be relatively calm, even talking on the cell phone while driving through the turmoil.  It was touching to see people’s faces  light up as they peered into the van and saw that we were white;  one motorcyclist yelled out, “Hey! It’s Americans!”

Hospitality and Fellowship
When we arrived to Sunny’s parent’s house, we were immediately greeted by the family members, Oceanside team, and a full dinner on the table. We spent the night refreshing ourselves from the long journey and were incredibly blessed by the hospitality of Sunny’s parents.  From providing bottled water for our two teams for the entire two weeks we are here, to opening their home and allowing us to use their bathroom and bedrooms, to greeting us with coffee and tea this morning (which, by the way, is so much better than coffee America), our hearts are blessed and encouraged by how willing they are to serve us.  We pray for the opportunity to serve and bless them in return.

The Bible College and Teaching Time
Our day today began with breakfast and devotions with both Calvary teams.  We then continued on to the Bible college where Ted, Luke, and Donald had the opportunity to teach the students and John and Charles led them in worship.  Sunny and the students were very blessed by the commentaries and supplies!  And despite Luke’s computer crashing, with all his notes, God enabled him to teach just the same.  Praise Him!

The Women’s Experience
After Ted’s teaching for the first session at the Bible college, us women left for a village meeting with some Christian women from one of the villages.  We sang for about an hour and prayed for another hour, which was quite a different experience than prayer and worship time in the States (more on that another time). Sarah Ryan also shared her testimony with the ladies and encouraged them with some Scripture.  We were also blessed as the children sang us some English worship songs; so sweet for them to learn them for us.  Please pray for a women, Lolita (sp?), whom we prayed for as a group.  She has come from a Hindu family and is either not a believer or is a new believer exploring Christianity.  Pray that she and her family would come to know the Lord as Savior.

So far, it has been evident that Sunny, the Bible college students, and the women have been as excited to meet us as we have been to meet them.  We praise the Lord for the opportunity to be here and bringing us here safely.  He certainly is an awesome God.  Praise Him!

A Note From Sarah in Sri Lanka

Well, we made it safely to the Sri Lanka airport. We are all having tea/coffee.  We have an eight-hour layover. The previous airport (Kuwait) was very interesting. It was very crowded and the toilets were very interesting. This is all new to me since I have never traveled this far outside of the States.

People just cut right in front of us Americans.  Haha ... which is okay! But they also had smoking rooms so it was very smoking in the airport. This Sri Lanka airport is very nice and large, but very humid. Ted and Luke talked about going out and getting an elephant and bring it by the windows for the rest of us who don't have visa's to leave. Haha... That would be fun!

We are all doing okay even with the lack of sleep. It has been difficult to sleep on the airplanes for sure. The Sri Lanka airlines where full of very nice people.  So it is like 6:30am here right now. So we are just hanging out for a while, and then we're off to Chennai. The other team members should already be there.

I just wanted to let everyone know that we made it safe almost the whole way! And we girls are surviving with greasy hair wearing the same clothes! Haha... we will live!
Love you all, and thank you for your continued prayers as God uses all of us in India!

Love Sarah and the rest of the team!

Safely in Kuwait

Our team has safely arrived in Kuwait, after three flights, some minor complications, and a little fatigue.  We shared in our "morning" devotions soon after arriving, which was actually in the evening here.  With Bibles open and eyes watching, it was great to fellowship in the Lord and our hearts are encouraged to see His faithful hand guiding us thus far.

So far, Gracia, John, and Sarah Ryan have already had the opportunity to share with people on their flights.  Please pray for Carolin and Chelsea (those talked to on the plain).  And we handed out tracks to some Hindus from Maryland, so please pray for them.

We are about to board our flight for Sri Lanka, so continue to pray for:
  • safe travels
  • the Lord's strength
  • and the Lord's work
Grace be with you all and Happy New Year!
